Many headaches are not just "in the head". Tension-type headaches — the band-like pressure kind — are closely tied to tight muscles in the neck, shoulders, scalp and jaw, and neck problems can refer pain up into the head. Even with migraine, neck and shoulder tension is a common trigger and amplifier. That is why a treatment aimed at the muscles — massage, Tuina and acupuncture — can be a sensible part of the picture.
Call 911 for a sudden "worst-ever" thunderclap headache, or a headache with weakness, confusion, fainting, or after a head injury. See a doctor promptly for headaches with fever and a stiff neck, vision changes, a new pattern after age 50, or headaches that steadily worsen over days.
This page is general information about how massage therapy and acupuncture may help — not a diagnosis or a promise of outcome. At your first visit I assess your condition before treating; if treatment is not improving things, I will say so honestly and suggest the next step.
