Sciatica and leg pain: how acupuncture and massage can help

Sciatica is the name for pain that travels — from the low back or buttock down the back of the leg, sometimes with tingling or numbness. It happens when the sciatic nerve is irritated, by a disc, joint stiffness, or deep gluteal muscles like the piriformis. Treatment aims to ease the pain and the muscle tension around the irritated area.

When to see a doctor first

Seek prompt medical care if leg pain comes with bladder or bowel changes, numbness in the saddle area, a foot that starts dragging (foot drop), or weakness that is progressing. Pain after a major fall or accident should also be assessed medically first.

This page is general information about how massage therapy and acupuncture may help — not a diagnosis or a promise of outcome. At your first visit I assess your condition before treating; if treatment is not improving things, I will say so honestly and suggest the next step.
